Reading Books To Babies

It has been found that reading to your infant/child is very helpful in their brain development.  It helps expand their vocabulary and also stimulates their interest in learning about other things, not available to them otherwise.  This article provides helpful information why you should read to your infant/child.  You can read the complete article here.

Fur Babies and New Babies

Welcoming a new addition to the family is an exciting time.  An infant in the home means new sights, sounds and smells for parents and pets alike.  With the average American family having two children, and 30-40 percent of Americans owning either a dog or cat, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, introducing a fur baby to a new baby is a situatin many people encounter.  The normal anxieties of parenting can be compounded when there's a pet in the house; your dog or cat might not cooperate with the new addition now occupying your attention.

Preparation
Before your new bundle of joy arrives, prepare your pet for this change by modifying your daily behaviors.

New Sights and Smells
If you know someone with a baby or young child, have them visit your home ahead of your baby's arrival.  This will expose your pet to the new sights, sounds and smells of infants.  Make sure all interactions are supervised to gauge your pet's behavior.  It might also help to rub baby lotions and oils on your own skin to familiarize your animal with new scents.

Separation
The Humane Society recommends accustoming your pet to spending less time with you.  Naturally, your attention will be on your infant, and your pet is likely to feel isolated.  To help alleviate this separation anxiety, decrease the amount of time you spend with your pet before your baby arrives. It can also help to have other family members further develop their relationships with your pet.

New Interactions
Once the baby arrives, it is important to create a positive environment for your pet around your child.  The ASPCA recommends teaching your dog or cat that when the baby is present, your animal will be rewarded either with treats, petting or playing.  When you feed the baby, feed your dog or cat.  When you walk y our dog, try to take the baby along.  Your pet should associate good things happening with the baby's presence.

Basic obedience is important during this time too.  There will be moments you want space away from your animals.  If you don't want them in the nursery, implement this boundary early and often.  If you're a dog owner, practice commands that will teach your dog distance and space.  Look into obedience training ahead of the baby's birth.  Teach your pet to sit, stay or even kennel.

If you are concerned about how your pet will interact with your new child, consult your pediatrician or veterinarian.  Introducing a new family member changes the dynamic of the household, but forward thinking can help you, your baby and your pet stay calmer during this time of change.

Beating the Binky Blues (How to Wean Your Baby From Their Beloved Pacifier.)

The pacifier goes by a variety of names, such as binky, comfy or soothy.  It has been a time-tested parenting prop to ease babies through fussy spells.  When to use it and when to discard it are common concerns of parents.

Some babies re born with an intense need to suck and are calmed by the pacifier.  Additionally, salva is a natural dental antiseptic that is good for oral hygiene as well as an intestinal development.  Some insatiable children, even after finishing nursing, need to suck longer.  Try using a clean finger as a pacifier to provide a more natural skin-to-skin feel.  You can manipulate your finger properly into your baby's mouth to stimulate sucking.  If they won't accept finger sucking, a pacifier may keep the peace.

When to break from the binky
Don't worry that pacifiers are causing any psychological problem -- because they don't.  Pacifiers are just peacemakers.  This does not imply a psychological problem or a need unfulfilled by parents.  The ability to self-comfort is a psychological bonus.  For most infants. pacifier use is a harmless habit.

Dependency
How do you know when you're overdoing the pacifier? When your baby cries and you find yourself, by reflec, reaching for the pacifier instead of reaching for your baby, it's time to let go of the pacifier.  If your baby is reaching for the pacifier instead of reaching for a parent, it's time to let it go.  We also know that sucking on a pacifier exerts a lot of pressure, which, if continued well into toddlerhood, can lead to overbite and other dental malaignments.

Baby has frequent ear infections.
A study conducted in Finland found that infants who used pacifiers frequently suffered more ear infections.  When parents were advised to limit the pacifier use, the incidence of ear infections diminished.  While thisis strictly a statistical correlation, a possible reason is that continuously sucking on a pacifier distrubs the normal functioning of the eustachian tube, al;lowing fluid to build up in the middle ear.

How to bump the binky
Yes, there reaches a time to get rid of the pacifier, but try convincing millions of babies who are hooked on it to give it up.  If your baby has any of the above whens, here are some hows:

Substitute and distract
Besides being a human pacifier for a while, give your baby other attachment objects or comforting tools, like a cuddly doll or teddy bear.  When your baby is upset or anxious, distract them into a fun play activity.

Trade it
Here is the most effective binky-breaking trick that we've used in our practice.  Take your child to the toy store and let them pick out a toy to "trade" for the pacifier.  Not a bad deal, the pacifier stays in the waste basket in the store, and the child leaves with a new toy.

Lose it
Make the pacifier less convenient to find.  When your toddler starts foraging around the house looking for their rubber friend, distract them into fun activites to get their mind off the pacifier.  Then, announce the pacifier is "lost" while you introduce some novel cuddly toys and spend more cuddle time with your child.  Or, simply have the "Binky Fairy" visit one night an take away the pacifier and leave a more attractive gift.

Enlist peer pressure
Put your child in a group with non-pacifier-using paymates.  For the child who's really attached, throw a pacifier party and have everyone clap as the child throws the pacifier in the trash can.

Wean slowly
If your toddler is truly hooked on the pacifier, gradually shorten the frequency and length of time that they are plugged in.  Let them use the pacifier for short periods of time when you feel they really need it as you gradually introduce more comforting alternatives.  Remember, weaning from the pacifier, just like weaning from the breast, does not mean stopping cold turkey.  Rather, it is a change fro one relationship to another.  No matter what technique you use to break from the pacifier, you hve to simultaneously increase attachment objects.

/when it comes to a pacifier, use it, don't abuse it, and when the time is right, lose it.

Better Brain Development

Much of human brain development occurs before the age of two, or during what many pediatricians refer to as the first 1,000 days, beginning at conception.  During this time it is imperative that parents and caretakers help foster this growth through three critical categories: nutrition, activities and discipline.

Nutritian
An infant's nutrient stores begin with the mother's nutritional status as the brain develops quite rapidly in utero.  Incorporating a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and dairy into your diet during pregnancy is the best way to ensure your baby is growing properly.  It is also important to ensure adequate intake of iron and folic acid.  Iron is important for a multitude of functions, and its deficiency can result in anemia, slowed growth and development, and behavioral problems.  Folic acid supplementation is known to prevent neural tube defects, a group of neurologic abnormalities, such as spina bifida.

In the newborn and infant period, breast milk is the healthiest choice.  Babies who are breast-fed are known to have higher IQs, better academic achievement and improved motor development.  Breast milk contains essential fatty acids (omega-3), and the iuron found in breast milk is better absorbed than that in a formula.

Once your child is introduced to solid foods, it is best to provide them healthy choices -- a diet rich in nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free dairy.  Eating fresh fruits is superior to drinking sweet, sugary juices that are directly related to poor dental health and cavities.

Activities
The best activity to promote your child's language and reading skills is to read to them every day.  Children exposed to literature have a wider vocabulary and are better prepared for kindergarten  Reading helps introduce words to your baby while also promoting bonding.

The toddler stage can be trying.  However, encouraging your child to explore a safe environment is integral to development.  No electronic device or screen will replace what your baby gains from face-to-face interaction and simple toys -- build with blocks, use tactile toys and draw pictures to improve fine motor skills.

Discipline
Reinforcing positive behavior and ignoring negative behavior allows your child to learn what is socially acceptable and wht is not.  When your young child does something right, reinforce it wih lots of clapping, priase and smiles.  Toddlers are seeking your attention, and ignoring their unwanted behaviors (when sage) is effective in ending them.

Food and toys aside, a young mind thrives best in a loving and nurturing environment.  Give your baby supportive attention and a nourishing diet from the outset, and you're well on your way to a healthy, developing child.
